Espresso Ratio Explained: Dose, Yield, and Strength
Espresso confused me until I stopped thinking "how much water" and started thinking dose-to-yield. The yield is the liquid weight in the cup — not the water you put in. Let me show you the model I use.
Typical starting points
- Dose: 18 g is a common double-shot dose.
- Yield: 36 g gives a 1:2 ratio.
- Ratio: yield ÷ dose (1:2 means 36 g from 18 g).
Why it matters
A longer yield (1:3) tastes weaker and brighter; a shorter yield (1:1.5) tastes heavier. Beans and machine shift the best value.

On the numbers
The 1:2 dose-to-yield idea isn't mine — equipment makers and cafes publish those ranges all over the place. I'm repeating them as public references and my own starting points, not as a fixed law. Your machine and beans will have the final say.
